The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."

His passing follows shortly after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including a number of outfits for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry laments the passing to a true visionary whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
