Around 50 cars have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Law enforcement say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they stated.
Police then found multiple other smeared cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say initial examinations show the fluid was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; officials are currently not aware of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials stated they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for details.
A senior official said the vandalism left him without words and required to be solved promptly.
"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he stated on social media, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at residents of migrant background in 2020.
