Information Available Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
A minimum of 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were admitted to the hospital.
Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Listed are the victims who have been named so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as āvivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help peopleā.
āHow can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?ā a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. āHe moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,ā she said.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
In a statement, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
āThis despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,ā the statement read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with several in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an āhorrific scene,ā but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a āstroke of luckā he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to āa large numberā of shots.
āI thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,ā he explained. āI sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. Iām ok.ā
