Educational institutions in Nigeria's northern region have become frequent targets for weapon-wielding factions

Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a educational institution for young women in north-western Nigeria, police reports indicate.

The armed faction breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the start of the week, police confirmed.

The armed individuals "engaged police personnel on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and abducting the learners from their dormitory, an official report indicated.

One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now receiving treatment.

Observers recounted a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who came shooting randomly to create fear.

Local residents disclosed to media that the gunmen subsequently marched a contingent of young women into adjacent wilderness.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and vigilante groups" to the area.

A organized locating and saving mission is underway in surrounding forests and suspected escape routes.

In recent years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have regularly come under attack for armed groups, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or leverage deals with the government.

The attack in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency troubling the locality, causing relatives in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they expect and desire their young ones' unharmed reappearance.

Protection challenge in the northern regions of Nigeria has worsened considerably in the last several months, with educational institutions experiencing the greatest impact of the unrest.
