Putin Assures Uninterrupted Energy Supplies to the Indian Nation in Snub of American Sanctions

Amid a clear message to Western nations, President Vladimir Putin stated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to guarantee “continuous” supplies of energy resources to India. This declaration came when Putin and Modi met in Delhi and asserted their bilateral ties were “immune to external pressure.”

A Message Directed at the West

This affirmation, delivered Friday, seemed to be a direct challenge at western countries, that have sought to pressure New Delhi into scaling back its close relations with Moscow. The backdrop comes after previous US actions, such as additional tariffs on India because of its acquisition of Russian oil.

“Our nation is a trustworthy supplier of oil and gas and everything necessary for the growth of India’s industry,” Putin said. “We are ready to keep securing the consistent flow of resources for the booming Indian economy.”

Modi, while not referencing crude specifically, supported the theme by stating that “a stable energy base has been a strong and crucial pillar of the Indo-Russian alliance.”

Challenging Washington's Stance

In the lead-up to the talks, in a TV appearance, Putin had questioned US interference regarding India's oil imports. The president questioned, “If the US is entitled to buy our nuclear fuel, why shouldn’t India have the equivalent access?”

Putin's arrival marked his initial trip to India following the start of the situation in Ukraine, and the two nations undertook a deliberate show to project that the personal rapport between the heads of state remained intact.

A Warm Welcome

In a unusual move, the Indian PM met Putin upon his arrival. The two shared a warm hug akin to close allies before having a one-on-one meal on Thursday evening.

He later described India's alliance with Russia as “a lodestar” and added it was “founded on reciprocal esteem and profound confidence.”

Strengthening Strategic Cooperation

The meeting yielded a number of important deals across defence and trade relations. A cornerstone agreement was the finalization of an strategic roadmap extending until 2030, which aims to double mutual trade to $100bn each year by the 2030 deadline.

The leaders also vowed to recalibrate their military partnership. While Russia is still India's primary source of defence equipment, this role has diminished in recent years as India works to widen its sources.

The official release stressed an agreement on the co-development of sophisticated military systems, even if direct reference of systems like the Su-57 fighter jet were left out.

Overall, both nations affirmed that amid the “ongoing challenging, strained, and unpredictable geopolitical situation, the Indo-Russian partnership remain durable to external pressure.”
