A comprehensive search and rescue mission is actively ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a pair of missing sailboats loaded with relief goods traveling from the Mexican coast to Cuba.

Maritime Search Missions Launched

Authorities in Mexico has sent navy personnel and military search aircraft to locate the missing boats, which were had on board at least nine total personnel, per a military release.

The vessels had been expected to arrive in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their docking, authorities reported.

The Situation of Humanitarian Support to Cuba

The island nation has depended significantly on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the island struggles through multiple nationwide blackouts.

"The captains and crews are experienced sailors, and each boat are equipped with suitable safety systems and emergency beacons," a spokesperson involved in the effort said.

The nine individuals on board are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is working closely with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.

Previous Humanitarian Delivery

Just days before, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and officially received a separate vessel that had carried a significant amount of donated goods to the island.

That boat, called "a new Granma" after the yacht in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, drugs, baby formula, bikes and foodstuffs.

Wider Geopolitical Backdrop

Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of attempts to ship essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a energy blockade on the island nation began.

The United Nations have since highlighted ""critical" shortages of supplies, with more than fifty thousand operations cancelled in Cuba because of power shortages.

Diplomatic measures have increased in recent months, with remarks from different officials highlighting the delicate state of bilateral relations.

Reacting to certain statements, a senior Cuban official insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Reports suggest that initial phases of negotiations were initiated, although their present status remains uncertain.

The Mexican navy said it was committed to using every available asset at its disposal to find the boats and secure the safety of the people on board.

To date, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
