US Military Executes Deadly Strike in Pacific, Resulting in 4 Deaths

According to a senior defense spokesperson, the American military carried out a lethal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of four people.

“A US joint task force conducted a deadly attack on a craft linked to a terrorist group in open sea. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was traveling along a established drug smuggling route and was involved in narco-trafficking operations. All four male drug traffickers were killed, and no American forces were harmed.”

Context and Prior Actions

This announcement comes a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on social media, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and other crimes, vowing to escalate the military presence.

Just on the previous day, US defense officials stated it had conducted strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, killing eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 military engagements have killed at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.

Administration Defends Tactics Amidst Scrutiny

The administration has encountered growing pressure to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have declined to do so. The administration has supported its campaign as a success, arguing it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the limits of legal military action.

While the administration has stated the campaign is about stopping drugs destined for the US, remarks from a senior aide seemed to confirm a wider political aim. In a recently published interview, the senior advisor said the president “wants to keep on blowing boats up until Venezuela's president surrenders or concedes.”

This suggests the military campaign may be linked to a strategy to oust Venezuela's current leadership.
