Zohran Mamdani confirms his intention to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that sparked debate in his campaign.
A Historic Residence
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central platform, hesitated to declare this decision immediately after his victory in November.
"My choice rested on the security of my family and the need to focusing my complete efforts on implementing the platform on affordability New Yorkers elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
He resided in Astoria, Queens, a district known for its abundance of immigrant communities and global cuisine.
"To Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," he noted.
"Even though I'm moving there, Astoria will continue to reside inside me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
Campaign Controversy
Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.
Yet his rivals, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the apartment although he hails from a famous family.
A House Not Always Used
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side for his three terms, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg felt it should be a place for public city functions, and championed a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.
A Grand New Home
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings a stark contrast to his modest Astoria apartment.
With its cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed to reflect the home's historical period.
The estate, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
His former home is rent stabilised, which means the city imposes caps on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers consider these apartments essential protections as the housing expenses outpaces what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
